Teddy Sheringham has urged Manchester United to beat Arsenal and Chelsea to the signing of Michael Olise, claiming the Crystal Palace star should be ‘at the top of the club’s wishlist’.
Olise was sidelined for half of Palace’s campaign due to a hamstring injury but the forward still managed to catch the eye, racking up ten goals and six assists in 19 top-flight appearances.
The 22-year-old’s outstanding performances over the past three years with Palace have alerted some of the Premier League’s top sides and a tug of war is expected for his signature this summer.
United, Arsenal and Chelsea are all believed to be in the race for Olise’s services and Palace have reportedly responded by slapping a £60million price tag on their prized possession.
Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta – Palace’s two other most valuable assets – are also attracting strong interest and all three players could be set for the exit door at Selhurst Park over the coming weeks and months.
Reports last month suggested Arsenal had the edge over their rivals in pursuit of Olise given they could offer Champions League football, with Chelsea and United missing out on qualification for Europe’s premier competition.
However, Sheringham believes a club of United’s stature ‘should be in’ for a ‘top player’ of Olise’s profile and hopes to see the winger complete a move to Old Trafford.
‘I’d like to see Michael Olise as a Manchester United player,’ the former United and England striker – an integral member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble-winning side – told Genting Casino.
‘He has been at the top of his game for Crystal Palace over the last few months of the season and he should be at the top of United’s wishlist.
‘I like him as a winger and United should be looking at players who are the main reason for their current club doing well, in this case Crystal Palace.
‘Top players like that, United should be in for them.’
Olise put pen to paper on a four-year contract with Palace last August, tying him to the club until the summer of 2027.
Speaking after Palace’s victory over Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season, Oliver Glasner said he was confident of keeping hold of Olise, Eze and Mateta.
‘I am very confident they’ll be here because they have contracts and no one has told me they’ll be leaving,’ the Palace manager told reporters.
‘I think what we have done is that we have shown them that Crystal Palace have ambition.
‘We have shown them how we want to play, which path we want to go down, which journey we want to ride together. They can show their strengths, qualities and personalities and express themselves.
‘They fit together. This is what we can do. If something else happens, then this is football.
‘But Crystal Palace will be able to build a new Selhurst – because it will cost a lot of money.’
