Jude Bellingham has avoided punishment over his alleged slur directed towards Manchester United’s on-loan forward Mason Greenwood last month.
The Spanish FA (RFEF) has dismissed the case against Bellingham after it was alleged that he had called Greenwood a ‘rapist’ during Real Madrid’s win over Getafe on February 1.
Television cameras during the game caught Bellingham saying a two-syllable word in Greenwood’s direction after he was tackled by the 22-year-old, however, microphones by the side of the pitch did not pick up exactly what was said.
Getafe reported the incident to the match officials, who included it in their report to La Liga and a case was opened by the RFEF, with an expert lip-reader brought in to help with the investigation.
However, the RFEF has concluded that there is credible evidence of the word Bellingham used during the incident, therefore the Real Madrid midfielder will not face any punishment.
It’s also understood that Greenwood also did not want the matter to escalate.
Greenwood moved to Getafe last summer after United’s internal investigation concluded that he should restart his career elsewhere after his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.
Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February and United had considered reintegrating him back into the first team before the club received major backlash over the prospect of his return.
United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has now left the door open for Greenwood’s return and has said that a new decision will be made over the player’s future at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Getafe’s president said last month that Greenwood is keen to stay with the Spanish club for another season.
‘He has a clear conscience, he is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year,’ said Getafe president Angel Torres.
‘It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.
‘In Spain he has a market but they [Barcelona] have money. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.’
