Reece James is facing another spell on the sidelines for Chelsea and is not expected to return to first-team action until the New Year.
James has endured torrid luck with injuries in recent seasons, managing just 654 minutes of football since being named Blues skipper 15 months ago.
After missing Euro 2024 with a recurring hamstring problem, the full-back finally returned to fitness in late October and made four consecutive Premier League appearances before the November international break.
However, the 24-year-old has now suffered another injury setback having sustained a niggle in training.
While Enzo Maresca was coy about a potential timeline for James’ return during his press conference on Wednesday, reports from The Telegraph suggest that the defender will not return before the end of December.
The club are said to be supporting James behind the scenes following his latest injury and will take extra precautions with his rehabilitation in a bid to try and prevent another future setback.
Chelsea, who currently sit third in the table, face a crucial nine-game stretch during December as they look to keep themselves within touching distance of league leaders Liverpool.
Chelsea’s fixtures in December
Aston Villa (H) – December 1 (Premier League)
Southampton (A) – December 4 (Premier League)
Tottenham (A) – December 8 (Premier League)
FC Astana (A) – December 12 (Conference League)
Brentford (H) – December 15 (Premier League)
Shamrock Rovers (H) – December 19 (Conference League)
Everton (A) – December 22 (Premier League)
Fulham (H) – December 26 (Premier League)
Ipswich Town (A) – December 30 (Premier League)
Undoubtedly disappointed by his latest injury, James recently penned a message on his social media in which he vowed to return stronger from his latest setback.
‘Hello all, I hope and wish you’re all well,’ he said on Instagram.
‘This message is to the people that understand & have respect for what I’m going through… I appreciate you so much, your support and kind messages go further than you could ever imagine.
‘And just to touch on me… I’m doing okay, been better and also been worse. Another challenge ahead accepted. Eventually I’ll come out on top. Against all odds.’
The Blues face German side Heidenheim in the Conference League on Thursday as they look to maintain their perfect record in the European competition.
Maresca’s side then return to Stamford Bridge on Sunday where they welcome Aston Villa who are seeking to end their four-match winless run in the league.
