Mikel Arteta has warned Aaron Ramsdale no talks on his future at Arsenal will take place until the end of the season.
The England international lost his place as the Gunners’ undisputed No.1 just five games into the current season, despite appearing to have done little wrong.
Summer signing David Raya subsequently made a shaky start to his Arsenal career but has played an increasingly prominent role in recent weeks, with Arteta’s side currently in a rich vein of form.
The terms of his loan move from Brentford, however, mean Raya is prevented from playing against his parent club tomorrow, when a win for Arsenal would see them, temporarily at least, return to the Premier League summit.
Ramsdale’s last top flight appearance came in a 1-0 win at the Gtech Community Stadium back in November where he gave an understandably jittery performance.
Arteta, however, maintains full faith in the 25-year-old who is rumoured to be interesting the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle United.
For now, at least, Arteta has urged the former Sheffield United goalkeeper to focus on helping Arsenal in their pursuit of glory before resolving his long-term future in the summer.
‘Now is the season, now is tomorrow, now is what we have done today and how can we improve tomorrow,’ Arteta said. ‘And those talks are for much after, I think.’
On taking the decision to gamble and replace Bernd Leno with Ramsdale back in the summer of 2021 he added:”The connection on a personal level goes two ways pretty much and I’m really happy that we made the call as a club to sign him.
Arteta, meanwhile said it was a great honour to be awarded the Premier League’s manager of the month award for February.
The Arsenal boss led his side to five straight league wins last month. He credited the group effort of his players and staff during a successful period in north London.
He said: ‘It’s a great honour in this league to get recognised in this way so I want to say thank you to the team and the staff for always being supportive and making this happen.’
