Mikel Arteta has hailed the ‘amazing’ game between Liverpool and Manchester City on Sunday before challenging his players to reach similar levels to stay top of the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s latest Premier League encounter saw their sides play out a breathless encounter in the latest twist in the title race.
The eventual 1-1 draw saw Arsenal remain top of the table after their dramatic late win over Brentford on Saturday.
‘It’s great to be top, that’s for sure,’ the Spaniard said when asked about his reaction to Sunday’s fixture.
‘It was an amazing game of football, with two magnificent teams, with so many alternatives.’
After the international break, Arsenal will return to a crunch title clash away against City, with Arteta hoping his players can raise their levels again to keep themselves at the front of the pack
‘I think it’s an amazing situation that we are involved, looking at the level those two teams [Liverpool and City] have that we are still there and sitting at the top.
‘The ambition raises, we want to continue to be there and we have to go game by game.’
Arsenal’s current attention will turn away from the league towards the Champions League, with the Gunners seeking to overturn a one-goal deficit from their first-leg tie with Porto on Tuesday.
The north Londoners looked uncharacteristically timid considering their free-flowing start to the calendar year but Arteta promised a much-improved performance from his side as they look to book their place in the quarter-finals.
‘We’re certainly going to have to tweak a few things to generate much more than we did [in the first leg],’ he added.
‘It’s the level of the Champions League. The fact that there are two games plays in your mind and we have to do that tomorrow.’
