Darren Fletcher is set to be reassigned as part of Ineos’ behind-the-scenes reshuffle at Manchester United with his current job title not reflective of his role.
United’s new minority owners are currently focused on overhauling the non-playing structure at Old Trafford, with incoming chief executive Omar Berrada kicking off the revolution when he arrives in the summer from Manchester City following an extensive period of gardening leave.
Ineos have also agreed a deal that will see Dan Ashworth join from Newcastle as the club’s first-ever sporting director – though they have yet to negotiate a compensation fee.
In addition to Ashworth, Ineos also want to bring in a head of recruitment to work directly under the former FA chief and have most recently been linked with a move for Crystal Palace’s Dougie Freedman.
Further to that, a new performance director – overseeing the academy and other non-recruitment aspects – is also being sought, with Southampton’s Jason Wilcox the leading contender.
That would mean three new very high-profile, very senior appointments to run the football operation under CEO Berrada.
Given the overhaul, existing football director John Murtough is not expected to be retained in his current role and it remains to be seen if he will be kept on at all.
According to The Telegraph, the future of Darren Fletcher is also up in the air though there is said to be a willingness to keep him at the club.
The former Scotland international, who played 342 times for United, currently has the title of ‘technical director’, though that is much more akin to what Ashworth, Freedman and Wilcox would be doing should they all be appointed.
Fletcher’s current job title is considered ‘misleading’ and he is likely to be handed a more suitable role – and job title – by Ineos.
While he has helped Murtough with recruitment, his role is predominantly focused on coaching and acting as academy first team liaison.
Ineos would like to find a different position for him at the club, though United are aware that a number of EFL teams have previously shown interest in speaking to him about a potential move into management.
Fletcher, whose sons are in the United academy, has remained committed to the club despite the overtures from elsewhere but he could be given a decision to make in the summer.
