Johnson-Thompson finally claims an Olympic medal having made her first appearance at the Games back in London in 2012.
The 31-year-old has won two World Championship golds and now can boast an Olympic silver on her fourth trip to the Games.
Thiam has now won gold at the last three Olympic Games, cementing the Belgian’s place as one of her country’s finest ever athletes.
It was seriously close, though, with Johnson-Thompson needing something of a miracle going into the last event and nearly pulling it off.
The Brit needed to beat Thiam in the 800m by eight seconds and as KJT crossed the line in second the Belgian was a fair distance behind her.
However, Thiam just got over the line, with a couple of seconds to spare to keep hold of her Olympic title.
Gold medalist in 2000, Denise Lewis, said of Thiam: ‘She’s been incredible, because she’s know the pressure that she’d be under to achieve this incredibly rare feat.
‘We’ll never see another heptathlete quite like her, she is sensational.’
