Jude Bellingham hopes La Liga officials will ‘use some common sense’ and reduce the Real Madrid star’s two-game suspension.
The England international was shown a red card late on in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Valencia but saw his effort ruled out in stoppage time as referee Gil Manzano had already blown the full-time whistle as the cross was delivered into the box.
The referee’s report, published after the game, read: ‘In minute 999 (sic), the player (5) Bellingham, Jude Victor William, was sent off for the following motive: After the end of the game and while still on the pitch, he came running over to me in an aggressive way shouting, repeatedly: “It’s a f*****g goal”.’
The suspension will rule Bellingham out of a home game against Celta Vigo on 10 March and a trip to Osasuna six days later.
Real Madrid intent to appeal against the decision and while Bellingham says he will ‘accept responsibility’ if the verdict is not changed, he hopes to see it reduced.
‘I don’t know if I can say too much about it, I have got investigations, bans and appeals up to my eyeballs so I don’t really know what to say,’ Bellingham told TNT Sport following Real’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig on Wednesday night.
‘But I would like to think maybe the club can appeal it and get it shortened.
‘But if not, I accept the responsibility for my actions and I have to support the team from the stands but I would like to think there would be a bit of common sense used from La Liga.’
Real progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League despite a disappointing performance on Wednesday night.
‘Having beat Leipzig 2-1 away from home in the first leg, they had to wait until the 65th minute for a goal from Vinicius Jr. Leipzig passed up a host of chances but levelled on the night through Willi Orban minutes later, ensuring a nervous end for the hosts.
Bellingham played 85 minutes before being replaced late on with his domestic suspension set to kick in this weekend.
The 20-year-old recently missed three games through an ankle injury
