Jamie Carragher has warned Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to steer clear of trying to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this summer.
United considered a move for the Belgium international last year with a new midfielder likely to be high on their list of priorities over the coming months.
Arsenal were understood to have opened talks with Everton over a deal for the 22-year-old in January with Chelsea also making their interest known.
The Toffees’ valuation of over £50million eventually dissuaded both London clubs from doing business in what was a quiet January window across the league.
With Everton under growing financial pressure, clubs elsewhere in the league could begin to circle around their prized assets with Jarrad Branthwaite also expected to be the subject of intense transfer interest.
But after a woeful night at the office as Everton were thrashed 6-0 by Chelsea on Monday, former Liverpool defender Carragher revealed he is not convinced by Onana, insisting all he has ever seen him do is ‘try lift the crowd’.
‘I must say this, Onana is a player who Everton may have to sell with the situation that they find themselves in financially,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.
‘He came in with a huge reputation. Frank Lampard brought him in, he looks the part, did really well I think for Belgium at Wembley and there was talk of him going to other big clubs.
‘I don’t see it. I haven’t since he’s been there.
‘I don’t know what he is. Is he a holding midfield player? Does he get forward? Does he get involved?
‘The only thing I have seen him do is try to lift the crowd, that is all I ever see him do when he plays for Everton.’
Onana was hauled off at time as Chelsea with Everton now just two points clear of the relegation zone following their latest points deduction.
