James Anderson has lifted the lid on the heated altercation he shared with Shubman Gill during Englandâs humbling fifth Test defeat to India in Dharamsala.
Already holding an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, hosts India stormed to their fourth successive victory, winning by an innings and 64 runs inside three days, to send England packing with their tails between their legs.
There was one moment to remember for England on the final morning of their gruelling tour, though, as veteran seamer Anderson, 41, removed Kuldeep Yadav to take his tally to 700 wickets in Test cricket.
The previous afternoon, Anderson dismissed Gill for 110 to take him to within one wicket of the incredible milestone, with only Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Australian icon Shane Warne (708) above the Lancashire swing bowler in the history books.
Shortly before Gillâs stunning innings was brought to an end, Gill exchanged a few choice words with Anderson in the middle and the India batsman refused to elaborate on the details of the conversation when quizzed after his sideâs win.
âI think it would be better for both of us to keep that chat private,â he said.
However, when Jonny Bairstow came out to bat in Englandâs second innings, the stump mic caught the England wicket-keeper-batter asking Gill exactly what he had said to the legendary England man.
Jonny Bairstow’s exchange with Shubman Gill
Bairstow: âWhat did you say to Jimmy about him retiring?â
Gill: âI told him he should retire.â
Bairstow: âAnd then he got you out next ball?â
Gill: âSo what? How many times hasâŚâ
Bairstow: âI was just asking.â
Gill: âHe can get me out after my 100.â
Bairstow: â100 per cent.â
Gill: âHow many 100s [do you have] this series?â
Bairstow: âHow many have you scored, full stop?â
Asked about the altercation on the BBCâs Tailenders podcast, Anderson had no problem explaining what he said to Gill before bringing the batterâs extraordinary knock to an end.
âI said something to him like, âDo you get any runs outside India?â, and he said, âItâs time to retireâ,â Anderson said.
âThen two balls later, I got him out.â
Anderson also revealed that Kuldeep â one of Indiaâs standout players of the series with the ball â predicted he would become his 700th wicket before it became a reality.
âKuldeep edged one down to third man for a single and as he got to the nonstrikerâs end and as I was walking back to my mark, he said, =âIâm going to be your 700th wicketâ,â he added.
âHe wasnât saying he was trying to get out, he was just saying he had a feeling. We both laughed at it.â
Speaking after Englandâs heavy defeat in Dharamsala, Ben Stokes said the sideâs doubters should âwrite them off at their own perilâ.
âSometimes taking risks does come to your downfall but when there is reason as to why youâre taking these risks and it doesnât quite work out, then thatâs fine,â the England captain told reporters.
âCricket is a tough game, it can eat you up. This tour in particular is always one that can lead you astray or make you a better player.
âIâve done a lot of India tours now. Obviously Iâm disappointed with my own performance for the team, but write this team off, write me off at your own peril.â
Stokes added: âI think weâve done a lot of things right. Weâve continued the way in which weâve gone about things in how much success we have had.
âFor us, this series isnât going to and shouldnât affect anything weâve managed to achieve before this tour.
âItâs the first time, in particular these last four games, where this team has been dominated, pretty much, throughout a series.
âWe will use this as inspiration to become a better team and to become better players. Thatâs the mentality we have.â
