Maguire appeared in some discomfort while clutching his left leg towards the end of the first half at Villa Park and Matthijs de Ligt came on in place of the 31-year-old for the second period.
It was only Maguire’s third start of the Premier League campaign, with Erik ten Hag rotating between the England international, De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez at the heart of United’s defence this season.
The centre-back, formerly United’s captain, had scored a dramatic last-gasp equaliser in the Red Devils’ previous clash with Porto in the Champions League.
Maguire was not included in Lee Carsley’s latest squad for England’s Nations League matches with Greece and Finland and United’s medical staff will be closely monitoring his fitness over the coming days and weeks.
‘Frustrated to pick up an injury at the weekend,’ Maguire told his followers on his Instagram page.
‘Will be a few weeks on the sideline for me but I’ll come back stronger.’
Noussair Mazraoui – United’s summer addition from Bayern Munich – was also forced off in Sunday’s stalemate with Villa, with Victor Lindelof coming on in the Moroccan’s place at right-back.
While the nature of the injury is yet to be confirmed, Mazraoui has since withdrawn from Morocco’s squad for the side’s two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Central African Republic.
The Old Trafford giants have been dealt a number of injury concerns at this early stage of the season, especially in defence, where Ten Hag is still without Leny Yoro (ankle), Luke Shaw (calf), Tyrell Malacia (knee).
And on Monday, it was announced that both Kobbie Mainoo (thigh) and Alejandro Garnacho (knee) could play no part for their respective nations during the international break.
‘I’ve had knee problems for the last two games and I won’t be able to be with the [Argentina] national team,’ Garnacho wrote on his Instagram page.
‘But I hope to recover quickly and be on the next date [against Paraguay and Peru in November].’
