Gareth Southgate will not consider Mason Greenwood for his England squad heading to Euro 2024 but has not ruled out a return beyond this summer’s competition.
Greenwood left Manchester United to join Getafe on a season-long loan after his parent club made a late decision against reintegrating him back into the first-team squad.
The 22-year-old has not played for United since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February.
His loan move to Getafe has been a successful one, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 26 appearances.
Greenwood has been capped once by England back in 2020 but is not in contention to return in the coming months with Southgate fearing his presence would prove to be a ‘distraction’.
‘Well for me I don’t think it’s something for pre-Euros,’ the England boss said.
‘I think allowing him to get his career going again abroad appears to have been a good move but I have to say I have not tracked it closely.
‘I think at this moment in time it would be a big distraction for the team and let’s see where that leads next season.’
Greenwood has made one senior appearance for England in September 2020, coming off the bench in a 1-0 victory over Iceland.
In the days that followed, he and Manchester City star Phil Foden were withdrawn from the squad for breaking Covid quarantine guidelines after leaving the team hotel without permission.
The striker is also eligible to play for Jamacia, whose head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson recently revealed he would ‘love to have him in my team.’
‘I would like to have the best players in our team, but it’s always up to the player himself if he wants to do it,’ he said.
While United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently left the door open for him to return to Old Trafford, the club have reportedly valued him at £40million with club officials meeting with counterparts from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid last week.
