Irene Aldana suffered one of the worst cuts you will see in combat sports in defeat to Norma Dumont at Noche UFC on Saturday night.
The women’s bantamweight fight was taking place at the incredible Sphere venue in Las Vegas, on an event headlined by Merab Dvalishvili winning the men’s bantamweight title from Sean O’Malley.
The preliminary card was headlined by Mexico’s Aldana taking on Brazil’s Dumont and it ended in bloody fashion.
Dumont picked up a unanimous decision victory but Aldana did well just to make it to the final bell given the brutal cut she suffered.
The 36-year-old was gushing blood from the huge gash on her forehead, with smaller cuts above her eye and on her nose which looked painful enough alone but were dwarfed by the biggest of the injuries.
UFC president Dana White posted a picture of Aldana after the bout on his Instagram, showing just how dangerous the sport can be.
Dumont takes her MMA record to 12-2, with a fifth straight victory which puts her very close to a title shot at women’s bantamweight.
Raquel Pennington holds the belt in the division and is set to defend her title against Julianna Pena at UFC 307 on 5 October.
Two titles changed hands on Saturday night in Las Vegas, with Dvalishvili beating O’Malley by unanimous decision, while Valentina Shevchenko won the women’s flyweight title back from Alexa Grasso, also by unanimous decision.
Diego Lopes scored a big win over Brian Ortega, while Fight of the Night was the split decision victory for Esteban Ribovics over Daniel Zellhuber.
