Cole Palmer insists Chelsea’s squad is full of quality following their 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Monday evening.
Palmer was crowned Man of the Match after another influential display at Stamford Bridge as he provided an assist and scored a superb goal from the edge of the box.
Chelsea have faced heavy criticism over the state of their squad having spent over £1 billion on new signings during Todd Boehly’s reign in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The club have faced calls from supporters to spend even more in the summer transfer window in order to improve but Palmer is adamant that the current squadwill prove doubters wrong.
‘We’ve had some difficult results – obviously the [Carabao] Cup final versus Liverpool, Wolves, many games – so to get points is vital for us,’ Palmer told Sky Sports after the win over Newcastle.
‘I think we’ve shown a bit of passion, courage, winning the second balls, not getting bullied, and just having the courage to play because I think that’s what we need as a young team, we’re going to make mistakes, everyone’s going to make mistakes, it’s about on to the next one and the next one.’
When asked about the criticism Chelsea have faced this season, Palmer replied: ‘I think there’s so much talent at Chelsea.
‘The fans don’t see it, you guys don’t see it, but I think the way the manager works on the pitch, the things he does with us, it’s only going to get better.
‘I’m sure, if not next season the season after, it’s a project, everyone’s young, everyone’s trying to play well, so I think you’ll see it sooner or later.’
In a separate interview with Stadium Astro, Palmer was again asked about whether he feels Chelsea need additional signings in order to improve.
But the former Manchester City forward is adamant that Chelsea can develop with their current squad.
‘There is a lot of quality there, not just me,’ Palmer said.
‘We’ve got loads of other players, so hopefully the team can gel a bit more than everyone has seen.’
