Former Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier has urged Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher to consider a move to Spain this summer, according to reports.
Gallagher wore the captain’s armband for most of Chelsea’s 2023-24 season in the absence of Reece James and was a key figure in midfield under Mauricio Pochettino.
But the 24-year-old has just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and could leave the Blues this summer.
Tottenham are interested in bringing Gallagher across the capital to north London but Atletico are also interested in signing him before the start of the new campaign.
AS report Atletico have an ally in their bid to convince him to leave England in Gallagher’s England teammate Trippier, who spent two-and-a-half years at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Trippier starred under Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital, helping Atletico win the Spanish title in 2021 before returning to England to join Newcastle United the following year.
AS report Trippier has spoken ‘very highly of Atletico’ in his talks with Gallagher, telling him to consider a the move.
Atletico have already seen an offer of €20m rejected by Chelsea this summer.
Gallagher is currently on holiday following England’s Euro 2024 final heartbreak, spotted attending the All-Ireland hurling final between Cork and Clare on Sunday afternoon alongside his partner Áine May Kennedy.
Tottenham and Aston Villa are also interested in signing the midfielder who last month praised former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino for helping him reach another level last season.
‘I think I’ve come a long way this season. I give a lot of credit to Pochettino and for what he’s done for me. He gave me responsibility and trust at Chelsea and, I think like I said, it puts me in a better position to be a bigger part of the squad for this tournament. I’m going to do everything I can to help the team as much as possible.’
Gallagher added: ‘He’s [Pochettino] done so much for me so I was sad for him and sad for the coaching staff.
‘But I’m really excited about the new manager [Enzo Maresca] coming in and myself and everyone at Chelsea are really excited to work with him.’
