Nicolas Jackson bemoaned his missed chances and admitted his goalscoring tally for the season should be far higher in the wake of Chelsea’s 2-2 draw away to Brentford.
The Senegal striker was at the heart of the action in Saturday afternoon’s all-London affair, opening the scoring before second-half goals from Mads Roerslev and Yoane Wissa put the hosts in front with 20 minutes remaining.
Axel Disasi headed home from close range to pull the visitors level in the 83rd minute and the points were shared, a result which kept the Blues in the bottom half of the Premier League table, two points off tenth-placed Wolves.
After receiving abuse for squandering a pair of golden opportunities, Jackson shushed Brentford’s noisy home support as he broke the deadlock in the 35th minute to take his tally to 11 for the campaign in all competitions.
The 22-year-old attacker has been widely criticised for his wastefulness in front of goal across a mixed debut season following his £32million move from Villarreal last summer – and his frustration was clear to see at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Jackson said he was remaining positive despite his missed chances and the club dropping yet more points in the top flight.
‘I think we deserved more because in the first half we played really good, but I guess in the second half they came harder and I guess because we played two games in four games so I think some players were tired,’ he said.
‘We wanted to win but we move forward with the point and try to win the next games.’
Jackson said he was ‘surprised’ by Brentford’s response in the second half and felt it was a ‘good point’ for Chelsea.
‘I was surprised [in the second half] because they came with different intentions to win,’ he added.
‘When they scored a lot of players were nervous but later we scored one and we wanted to win the game. Unfortunately we drew but it’s a good point.’
‘I was very happy [with the goal] because there was a chance I missed but I kept going and believed I could score for the team and make the team win.
‘Obviously I scored and then we drew so thank God we did not lose it.
‘We move forward and try to win the next games.’
Asked how pleased he has been with his development this season, Jackson replied: ‘I think it’s not enough because I missed a lot.
‘For me, it should have been a lot more but every game I try to make the team win and help my team-mates and the team-mates help me as well.
‘Every game, even if I don’t score, most important is that the team win. I missed a lot, a lot of chances, I should have scored more than 11.
‘But for me it’s just the beginning, I’m just starting to feel pleased in England and I keep moving.’
