An Australian Olympic hockey player is in custody in Paris after allegedly trying to buy cocaine in the French capital on Tuesday night.
The identity of the player has not been confirmed but the Australian Olympic Committee issued a statement on Wednesday morning regarding the arrest.
âThe Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th,â a spokesperson said.
âNo charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member.â
Both the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos were eliminated from competition in Paris after losing their quarter-finals earlier this week.
The arrest was first reported by a French crime reporter Jean-Baptiste Marty, who works for radio network Europe1.
He posted on X on Wednesday morning: âA member of the Australian field hockey team was arrested last night after buying cocaine in a street in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.â
Under the rules in place for the Olympic Village in Tokyo, players were required to vacate their rooms within 48 hours of the completion of their competition.
The Kookaburras lost 2-0 to Netherlands in their quarter-final on Sunday. The Hockeyroos went down to China 3-2 on Monday.
