Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State as a pivotal moment for constitutional democracy.
In a statement on Friday via X, Atiku emphasised the significance of the elections, which are set to take place tomorrow, highlighting their role in upholding the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
“The local government elections in Rivers State tomorrow stand as a beacon of hope, offering renewed vigour to constitutional democracy at the very core of governance,” Atiku said.
He praised the elections as a chance to breathe life into the foundational principles of our republic and urged all democracy advocates to rally in support of free and fair elections.
He said, “Undoubtedly, this election resounds as a powerful affirmation of constitutionalism and the rule of law, a cause that should rally the support of all true champions of democracy.
“It is a call to every believer in the democratic process to stand firm in defence of the people’s right to choose their leaders freely and fairly.”
Atiku commended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his leadership in ensuring the elections were held, stating, “I commend Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his courageous leadership.”
He also encouraged the residents of Rivers State to embrace their civic responsibilities, urging them to cast their votes with peace and purpose in selecting their grassroots leaders.
The former Vice President reiterated his belief in the sanctity of the democratic process, stressing that the people must be empowered to shape their future.
“It is my unwavering conviction that the democratic process is sacred, and through it, the people must be empowered to shape their future by choosing their leaders in every local community,” Atiku added.
