Arsenal have been handed a transfer headache over wonderkid Chido Obi-Martin with Bayern Munich interested in the player, according to reports.
Obi-Martin, 16, is considered to be one of Arsenal’s best academy products and the Gunners are desperate to keep him in north London.
The teenage forward remarkably scored 10 goals for Arsenal U16s in a 14-3 win over Liverpool U16s in November.
Obi-Martin was then thrown into Arsenal’s U18s side and conjured up seven goals in a 9-0 victory against Norwich U18s last weekend.
Arsenal have a major problem in keeping Obi-Martin, though, due to his status as a dual-nationality player combined with current Football Association (FA) rules.
Obi-Martin cannot sign a professional deal at Arsenal until his 17th birthday on November 29 under FA rules – but that does not apply in some other European nations such as Germany – where pro contracts can be signed at 16.
Following Brexit, Premier League youngsters with European Union (EU) passports such as Obi-Martin, who has represented both England and Denmark, have been targeted by German clubs who can offer pro deals and first-team football quicker.
The biggest German club of all – Bayern Munich – have now registered their interest in signing Obi-Martin from Arsenal, according to The Times.
Losing Obi-Martin to the team that knocked them out of Europe would be a major blow for Arsenal and the Gunners are doing everything they can to keep him.
The north Londoners are currently in negotiations with Obi-Martin’s representatives as they look to convince him to snub Bayern Munich.
Worryingly for Arsenal, Obi-Martin recently signed an agreement with Elite Project Group, who oversaw Jadon Sancho’s original move to Borussia Dortmund.
However, it must be stressed that it is not clear yet where Obi-Martin may end up and he may ultimately decide to stay at the Emirates.
