Aaron Ramsdale endured a nightmare return to the Arsenal side after he committed a huge error in Saturday’s game against Brentford.
The terms of David Raya’s loan move from the Bees meant the Spain international was prevented from appearing against his parent club.
Ramsdale, who hadn’t made a Premier League appearance since the reverse fixture back in April, was hardly troubled at all during the only period.
Indeed, he nearly created the opening goal for Leandro Trossard with a superb long throw that set the Arsenal winger away on goal before he was caught by the Brentford defence.
Arsenal’s early pressure eventually told in the 19th minute when Ben White’s cross was headed home by Declan Rice.
The Gunners failed to build on their lead but looked set to go in at the break ahead, before Ramsdale dallied on the ball and allowed Yoane Wissa the chance to charge down his clearance and score a bizarre equaliser.
‘He just hesitates,’ said a sympathetic Jamie Redknapp. ‘He’d given one away earlier on. The ball comes back to him and he just shuffles his feet.
‘I think he sees the next pass, his touch is actually really good but then he just hesitates and he misjudges how quickly Wissa is going to come onto him
‘I feel devistated for him. How he feels now only he can tell us. When you’re in that position as a player and you’ve given away a goal it’s so difficult for him.
‘It’s great his teammates are coming round him but it’s the last thing you want is a cuddle after that.
‘It’s a horror moment. He had three options he could have gone long to Saka, to Ben White, the easy pass would have been to give it to Saliba but hesitated and fair play to Wissa who made a good decision to press him.
‘Right now that inner voice in his head will be saying so many things he will be feeling like a washing machine, he’ll be in a spin. I feel sorry for him.’
